The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s biggest coral reef system, located off the coast of Australia.The Great Barrier Reef is home to more than 1,500 species of fish, 411 types of hard coral, one-third of the world's soft corals, 134 species of sharks and rays, six of the world's seven species of threatened marine turtles, and over 30 species of marine mammals

Artists respond to our changing world, creating art to communicate an awareness about our marine environment, particularly the bleaching of coral reefs. 

Margaret Wertheim

The Reef Project a crocheted coral reef created by Margaret Wertheim, and her twin sister, Christina. The project combines mathematical ideas, marine biology, a feminine handicraft and community involvement.  Over 7,000 people worldwide have participated in the project. The Reef Project responds to and addresses the environmental concerns of global warming and the pollution and destruction of our ocean habitats.





Courtney Mattison
Courtney Mattison is a California born artist and ocean advocate working to inspire others to conserve our marine habitats. She creates clay forms, inspired by the beauty of ocean ecosystems—primarily coral reefs—and the human-caused threats they face.
