Welcome Back!!!

Greeting/Introduction:

Welcome to art class! We are going to have an exciting year together in art, full of discovery
and art making. We will draw, collage, paint sculpt and stitch. We are going to continue to learn what it means to be an artist and how to work like an artist.

This year is our fourth year having choice art at our school. If you are a first grader it is new. The room is arranged into studio centers. You can create different kinds of art in each studio.

Expectations:
Take care of people
Take care of stuff
Behave like an artist

3 Sentence Curriculum:
What do artists do?
You are the artist.
The art room is your studio.

Mini Lesson:
What do these people have in common?
A runner finishing a race,  participating in jump rope for heart, and an artist completing a masterpiece?

They all have stamina!
That means they can come up with a goal and work towards it.
They can focus, concentrate and work hard to succeed.

Q: How to these people grow their stamina?

How can your grow your stamina in art class?
  • Find a comfortable space to work
  • Gather all the supplies you will need
  • Take time to choose a ‘just right’ idea.
  • THINK about your art as you are creating it.
  • What will I do next?  What color should I use?
  • Take a break to Share, Talk and Ask Questions about the art with a partner

Of course everyone will lose focus from time to time.  You may notice your mind is wandering.
Or you are looking away from your art more than you are looking at it.
Or maybe you forgot what you were going to do next.
The thing to do if that happens is to look carefully at your art and begin again with new focus.

Today we are going to practice building stamina by working on a drawing.
How long do you think your stamina can last?
Let’s set a timer and see how we do.

Find a place to work where you are comfortable, there are already drawing supplies on your
tables that you can choose from.

When we are working on building stamina what do our behaviors look like?
  • Quiet (Art Talk or No Talk)
  • Not bothering a neighbor
  • Raise our hand if we need teacher
  • Trying hard
  • Try to be independent … Be a problem solver …
  • Work for the whole time, not stopping early because you are “done”

20 minutes before the end of class remind students that there is 5 minutes left to work.
15 minutes before the end of class, time to stop.

Clean up expectations:
I will always play the clean up anthem at clean up time.
Clean up is silent.
Everyone should finish cleaning up their studio space before the end of the song.
(I will select 2 monitors to write down names of anyone talking, or not cleaning up)
Today, during clean up, you will be responsible

Dismiss one table at a time to WALK to the carpet QUIETLY

At the end of some classes we meet at the carpet to discuss what we did during studio time.
This is our meeting spot and our thinking spot.

What did you do to build your stamina today?
What problems did you solve when you were working?
What did your friend share about his or her art?

Remind students to raise their hand and wait to be called on .
In school we are respectful by raising our hands when we have something to say.
Thank individual students for being respectful and raising their hands.

Line Up Time.
Practice line up expectations:
Quiet
Feet on tape
Facing forward
