Cardboard Sculpture Mini Lesson
I get a lot of things I buy delivered to my home. They arrive in cardboard boxes. Sometimes I recycle them so that they can be made into new cardboard or paper products. Sometimes I bring them here to school students like you can reuse the cardboard to make fabulous things. Either choice is better than throwing them away.
You can make what you like out of cardboard, but it could be a fun challenge to design a house for an animal.
It could be a pet or a farm animal

Engagement with art can lead to understanding and appreciation of the natural world.
How do artists share the beauty of a snowy day in their art? How can you?
Landmark - an object or a feature of a landscape or town that has importance or makes a place easily recognizable
When you're on a road trip or walking through a town, you may notice sculptures or statues alongside the road, in a park, or next to you on the sidewalk. You may notice buildings or structures that look really old or unique. It can be fun to search for landmarks like these when you travel, even on your morning route to school.
A landmark is an object or a feature of a landscape or town that has importance or makes a place easily recognizable. Landmarks will often have a sign with information explaining their importance. When you travel, pay close attention to finding new landmarks everywhere you go.
Landmarks in the United States of America
There are many famous landmarks that attract people from all over to enjoy their sights. Some famous landmarks in the United States include the Golden Gate Bridge in California, Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, and the Statue of Liberty in New York. Around the world, there are other famous landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower in France and the Great Wall of China and the Great Pyramids in Egypt.
Consider a time when you saw or visited a landmark, or even learned about one.
What is the name of the landmark and where is it located?
What did you think about the landmark when you first saw it or first learned about it?
Sustainability Meeting the needs of people now without compromising the ability of people to meet their needs in the future.
This means a lot of things, but in art class it can mean using materials wisely, and not wasting them. It might mean re-using paper, cardboard, magazines and other items rather than throwing them away.
Every time you throw something away it gets sent to a landfill. More and more rubbish is piled on top until it is too big and the landfill has to be closed.
The great thing is that many things can be reused and recycled.
Lets watch what this might look like for you.
The art room is a GREAT place to REUSE items. Let's think about magazines in particular. WHY should we reuse them?
Cut shapes out of a magazine page. Here they cut out the shapes of houses.
Make an animal portrait. Get a copy of an animal and cut and glue magazine papers to cover most of the animal, leaving some of the original features visible.
Cut out shapes to create texture in your art.
You could use lots of different colors, or try to stay in the same color family, like all greens or all blues.
Make a portrait, use magazine facial features, and cut squares to frame it!
Find images you like, cut them out and create a story-or make something wacky and wonderful!

Observation- the act of careful watching and listening
People find beauty in nature. This mini lesson is about observing trees, and noticing changes throughout the seasons, and through the eyes of an artist. When you make your art, how can you express that beauty?
