Fibers Studio Opener: Third Grade

 What is Fiber Art?

Fiber art is a type of art that is made from fibers such as yarn, string, or cloth to create art.

You may be familiar with some forms of fibers such as sewing, quilting, crochet, and felting, because maybe you have a family member who enjoys creating using these methods.

(stuff below only a part of what will be included in video)

Fiber artist, Bisa Butler creates life sized portrait quilts, and spends up to 1000 hours creating them out of unique fabrics.

Artist, Michael Brennand Wood creates using wood and fibers, often using floral themes
He incorporates a lot of embroidery into his work.

Artist, Judith Scott created large sculptures out of yarn and other fibers. She was born with down syndrome and did not talk. Her art was her language, and her first sculpture was said to be her first words.

First Grade: Drawing Animals with Shapes- Draw/ Paint

   Painted Animals

Drawing first in the Painting Studio

Responding

8. Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.

A. Interpret

Interpret art by categorizing subject matter and identifying the characteristic s of form

Shape- a geometric figure such as a square, triangle, or rectangle.
Painting- the process or art of using paint

We can learn to see shapes in everything around us.
Knowing the names of shapes can help us describe and understand a work of art.

What shapes did you use to create your artwork today?

Draw Big!

What shapes do you see?
what would you draw first?

Sculpture Studio Opener: First, Second, Third

The Sculpture Studio

Sculptures are three-dimensional works of art made from clay, wood, metal, or stone. Some sculptures are tiny, while others are huge, like the Statue of Liberty! Sculptors use their hands and special tools to shape their artwork. In our art room we mostly focus on paper sculpture, and cardboard sculpture, but may experiment with other sculptural techniques.

 Drawing from Observation-Nature Up Close

Create

1. Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.

B. Investigation

Use observation and investigation in preparation for making a work of art.

Today we will learn to look carefully at flowers and leaves to discover the beautiful details in the natural world. This is called an observation drawing.

During this week, you can look for other natural objects that you might like to observe closely and draw.

Day 1

Day 2

Have you ever looked at a flower up close?

What did you notice that you didn't see from far away?

Here is a painting from far away of a field of poppies

Here is a painting close up of a single poppy

Do you think this artist could paint this flower from memory?
Or would the artist need to see the flower in real life?

This artist, Georgia O'Keefe would study flowers in real life so she could notice all the lines, shapes and colors.

Some artists like to observe nature from a distance, far away

Some artists like to observe nature up close

Which way do you like to observe nature?

Welcome to the Painting Studio!
Painting is another fun way to create art. Artists use brushes and paint to add colors to their artwork. Some paintings look real, while others are abstract, using shapes and patterns.
This week we are learning about working in the painting studio.

We are going to learn studio procedures for set up and clean-up, look at some paintings by master artists, learn how to care for the materials in the painting studio, and explore painting with watercolor paint.

We will complete the skills we learn for our painting studio.

Materials Needed:
White Paper
Pencils, Eraser, Sharpie
Watercolor paint (Third Grade)
Cake Tempera (First and Second)

Create

1. Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.

A. Play & Ideation

Use observation and investigation in preparation for making a work of art.

A collage is made by cutting up, arranging, and gluing down materials such as paper, string, fabric, and newspaper.

"Coller is a French word, that means to glue something together, so it makes sense that a collage is when you glue materials to a flat surface.

sheet music
yarn
stickers/stamps
buttons
fabric
You can also draw on your collage!

Materials needed:
White Paper for background
Colored Construction Paper

Pencil
Scissors
Glue Stick
Crayons or Markers (optional)

This week we will practice making our own collage.

You can make a collage of anything you want.

Drawing Studio Opener: Grades 1-3

 Let's Draw!

Create

1. Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.

A. Play & Ideation

Engage collaboratively in exploration and imaginative play with materials

B. Investigation

Use observation and investigation in preparation for making a work of art.

This week we are experimenting with drawing materials.
We will show what we know using pencils, crayons and markers.
This practice will prepare us for our work in the drawing studio!

With a pencil...
You can create light and dark values.
Value is the lightness or darkness of a color.

You can create light and dark values by changing how hard you press on your pencil.

Blending and Layering:
Making new colors in the drawing Studio
You can layer crayon by coloring one color over another lightly.

Video for 1st and 2nd Grade

Video for 3rd Grade

Can you see where the colors overlap in layers to create new colors?
Why do you think it is important to color lightly when layering?

Create your own drawing using the skills and tools we just learned about.

Ask yourself these questions:
1. How did you use your pencil? Did you press light or hard?
2. Did you layer crayons? Where? If you didn't, add one color on top of another to create layers.
3. Did you use the tip or the side of the markers?

Congratulations! You are now ready to use the drawing studio!

Introduction to Art Class: Third Grade

Third Grade Intro. Lesson:

Welcome to art class! We are going to have an exciting year together in art, full of discovery and art making. We will draw, collage, paint. sculpt and sew. We are going to continue to learn what it means to be an artist and how to work

like an artist.

Each year we go over our class expectations.

  1. Take care of people

2. Take care of stuff

     3. Behave like an artist

How do we take care of people in the art room?

Share the colored pencils with your table mates. If someone is using a color you need say: "may I please use the blue pencil when you are

finished?" Then wait patiently.

How do we take care of stuff in the art room?

For example, when we are done with a marker, we should place the cap back on till it snaps so that the marker doesn't dry out.

How do we behave like an artist?

One way that I show I am an artist is I think about what I'm going to make before I begin. I envision my idea.

What is art?

.

Always start with an idea even though it may change along the way.

Turn and talk to your friend about two ideas that you have for your art today. Then they take a turn sharing.

Today we are going to get our Studio Practice Books. We use our studio practice books to learn skills and classroom routines

for choice art.

Supplies Needed:

Studio Practice books

Pencil and Eraser

Crayons

Pass out books/ Name and class code.

You will create a piece of art using drawing supplies. You can draw whatever you decide.

Open your book to the page at the beginning of the book that says: "Draw a picture."

Think about what you want to draw. Close your eyes and try to picture what you want it to look like. Envision your idea. When you have your idea, draw the most important. parts first, then add supporting details, an interesting background. When you are ready, you may begin. Take your time drawing in pencil. Draw large enough so you fill the page and if you have time, you can color it in.

Clean-up expectations:

I will always play the clean-up anthem at clean-up time.

Clean-up is silent.

Everyone should finish cleaning up their studio space before the end of the song.

Today, during clean-up, you will be responsible for putting your supplies in the bin neatly, and putting your book in the box on the supply table.

Reflection:

After the drawings are completed, have students share their art with a friend before turning in book.

Remind students to raise their hands and wait to be called on.

Thank individual students for being respectful and raising their hands.

Line Up Time.

Practice line-up expectations:

Quiet

Feet on tape

Facing forward
