2nd Grade - Who Am I - Tempera

 What do I think about?

What is important to me?

We know a self-portrait is a picture of what we look like. But there is so much more about us that is important!

Can you create a self-portrait that also shows what is important to you?

Marc Chagall painted this self-portrait. He wanted to show some of the things that were important to him.

What is he thinking about? Where did he place the things he was thinking about?

Tempera Paint Self-Portrait Video

If you are going to create a self-portrait ask yourself these questions.

- Where will you place your head?

- What shape will you draw first?

- What things will you include in your self-portrait to show what you think and care about?

Sustainability-Painting on Paper Bags-Third Grade

Why should I reuse paper grocery bags?

In the U.S., over 10 billion paper bags are consumed each year, requiring the felling of 14 million trees. Paper bags are made from a renewable resource and are biodegradable.

Paper bags, with their biodegradable materials and recyclable disposal, are often considered to be the environmentally friendly choice when compared with their plastic bags.

Renewable Resource

The pulp used to make paper grocery bags comes from quick growing trees that can be replanted to produce more pulp, which is good, but if we are using trees to make a bag, why not reuse the bag?

Landmarks: Places and Spaces final lesson -Second Grade

What is a Landmark?

Landmark -  an object or a feature of a landscape or town that has importance or makes a place easily recognizable

When you're on a road trip or walking through a town, you may notice sculptures or statues alongside the road, in a park, or next to you on the sidewalk. You may notice buildings or structures that look really old or unique. It can be fun to search for landmarks like these when you travel, even on your morning route to school.

landmark is an object or a feature of a landscape or town that has importance or makes a place easily recognizable. Landmarks will often have a sign with information explaining their importance. When you travel, pay close attention to finding new landmarks everywhere you go.

Landmarks in the United States of America

The St. Louis Arch-St Louis, Missouri

Statue of Liberty-Liberty Island in NY Harbor

Mount Rushmore- Keystone, SD

Golden Gate Bridge- San Francisco CA

Landmarks Across the World

There are many famous landmarks that attract people from all over to enjoy their sights. Some famous landmarks in the United States include the Golden Gate Bridge in California, Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, and the Statue of Liberty in New York. Around the world, there are other famous landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower in France and the Great Wall of China and the Great Pyramids in Egypt.

Eiffel Tower- Paris, France

The Great Wall of China
Great Pyramids at Giza -Egypt

Leaning Tower of Pisa-Italy

Consider a time when you saw or visited a landmark, or even learned about one.

Largest Czech Egg-Wilson, Kansas

What is the name of the landmark and where is it located?

What did you think about the landmark when you first saw it or first learned about it?

Sustainability- Don't Throw it Away, Make Something! Third Grade

Sustainability Meeting the needs of people now without compromising the ability of people to meet their needs in the future.

This means a lot of things, but in art class it can mean using materials wisely, and not wasting them. It might mean re-using paper, cardboard, magazines and other items rather than throwing them away.

Recycle Logo" Images – Browse 1,022 Stock Photos, Vectors ...

Every time you throw something away it gets sent to a landfill. More and more rubbish is piled on top until it is too big and the landfill has to be closed.

The great thing is that many things can be reused and recycled.

Lets watch what this might look like for you.

PBS Garbage

The art room is a GREAT place to REUSE items. Let's think about magazines in particular. WHY should we reuse them?

PBS Magazines

Cut shapes out of a magazine page. Here they cut out the shapes of houses.

Make an animal portrait. Get a copy of an animal and cut and glue magazine papers to cover most of the animal, leaving some of the original features visible.

Cut out shapes to create texture in your art.

You could use lots of different colors, or try to stay in the same color family, like all greens or all blues.

Magazine Upcycle | Magazine crafts, Crafts, Preschool crafts

Make a portrait, use magazine facial features, and cut squares to frame it!

Find images you like, cut them out and create a story-or make something wacky and wonderful!

Beauty is All Around Us: Trees - First Gra

 A Tree is Beautiful

VARe7B.1

Observation- the act of careful watching and/or listening

Spaces and Places: Community Sculpture Second Grade

Places and Spaces: Community Sculpture- 2nd grade

Community-  a group of people living or working together in the same area. People in communities might go to the same schools, shop in the same stores and do the same things. They also help each other and solve problems together.

Today, you may choose to create individual squares of sculpture that feature an aspect of your community. Those of you who create a sculpture  may enjoy putting your neighborhood squares together to create a model of your community

Some examples are homes, schools (Festus), shops (main street), police and fire station, a church, produce stand, parks, water tower, creeks, playgrounds, restaurants and more!
