Lesson One: Focusing on Faces

Objectives:
Observe and discuss proportion in portraits 
Make a face map

Today we are going to make a face map so that we can practice placing the eyes, nose and mouth on the face. 

First, we begin with an oval for the face. Then we divide the face in half with a horizontal line. This helps us with eye placement.

Now, we will draw a vertical line down the center of the oval. 
This will help us make our faces symmetrical, or the same on each side. 

Third, we will draw a short line halfway between our  horizontal line and the bottom of the face. 
This will be where the bottom of the nose is placed.

Finally, we will draw a slightly longer line between the nose line in the chin for the mouth. 

Then you are ready to add your eyes, nose and mouth.

What does it mean to Recycle?

Recycling means making trash into something new. Every time you throw something away it gets sent to a landfill. More and more rubbish is piled on top until it is too big and the landfill has to be closed. The great thing is that most things can be recycled. 

But recycling isn't the only way to keep the planet healthier, we can also reuse and reduce the items in our lives. 

In fact the art room is a GREAT place to REUSE items.

Lets watch what this might look like for you.

Lets think about magazines in particular.

Cut shapes out of a magazine page. Here they cut out the shapes of houses.

Cut out shapes to create texture in your art.

You could use lots of different colors, or try to stay in the same color family, like all greens or all blues.

Paper Beads

Collage instead of using construction paper, use magazine papers

Find images you like, cut them out and create a story.

Materials Needed: 

9x12 White Paper 
One Dice per 2 Students
Pencil/Sharpie
Crayons/Markers/Colored Pencils

Draw large in pencil and trace in Sharpie! Then you may color with any of the drawing supplies! Enjoy!

Landmarks-Places and Spaces-Second Grade

What is a Landmark?

When you're on a road trip or walking through a town, you may notice sculptures or statues alongside the road, in a park, or next to you on the sidewalk. You may notice buildings or structures that look really old or unique. It can be fun to search for landmarks like these when you travel, even on your morning route to school.

A landmark is an object or a feature of a landscape or town that has importance or makes a place easily recognizable. Landmarks will often have a sign with information explaining their importance. When you travel, pay close attention to finding new landmarks everywhere you go.

Landmarks Across the World

There are many famous landmarks that attract people from all over to enjoy their sights. Some famous landmarks in the United States include the Golden Gate Bridge in California, Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, and the Statue of Liberty in New York. Around the world, there are other famous landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower in France and the Great Wall of China and the Great Pyramids in Egypt.

Spaces and Places - Maps-Second Grade

Maps

When we talk about spaces and places, communities, homes, happy places and towns, we can't forget to talk about maps.

Maps show us the directions to get from one place to another.

Maps give us information about a place a we want to know more about.

Maps can be a beautiful work of art. 

This book will show us all the possibilities of things you could make a map about.

Spaces and Places: Community Sculpture-Second Grade

 Today, you may choose to create individual squares of sculpture that feature an aspect of your community. Those of you who create a sculpture  may enjoy putting your neighborhood squares together to create a model of your community

Some examples are homes, schools (Festus), shops (main street), police and fire station, a church, produce stand, parks, water tower, creeks, playgrounds, restaurants and more!
