What can I do to make my work look even more interesting and complete? 

Drawing:

Chalk Pastel: 
soft layers
soften fingerprints with a tissue. 
gently erase places where chalk should not be

Drawings can be taken to collage

Collage: 
Embellish your work. Add thoughtful details to make your artwork more interesting. 
Beads, buttons, do dads and such...

Painting:
Take your painting to collage 
Overpainting--using small brush to add detail, adding texture to painting
Sharpie--use to add detail or define edges

Observe-Drawing Bugs

Have you ever heard someone say,

"Stop and smell the roses?"

It means slow down. and notice the little things. 

When you observe, you take time to pay careful attention to the world around you.  

Artists get inspiration from things they observe in the world. 
Artists learn see detail by practicing drawing from observation.

Drawing from observation: 

• It can be an animal, a person, a landscape , or a still life. 
• Observational drawing  is drawing what you see in front of you as realistically, and as true to life as possible.
• When we look at an object that we are going to draw look carefully, noticing shapes, light, shadow, colors, textures and details.

1. DRAW A BUG FROM IMAGINATION OR MEMORY ON ONE SIDE OF YOUR PAPER.
2. DRAW THE INSECT MODEL IN DETAIL ON THE OTHER SIDE OF YOUR PAPER.
   
   QUESTIONS: DO YOU FEEL MOST COMFORTABLE DRAWING FROM YOUR IMAGINATION OR FROM OBSERVATION? EXPLAIN WHY.
   WHEN DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD DRAW FROM IMAGINATION AND OBSERVATION? GIVE AN EXAMPLE.

Some of the best ideas come at unexpected times, not only in art class. 

It may happen on the bus, at dinner, while reading a book, or playing with friends. Times when you feel "bored" are often the best times to have the most brilliant daydreams! (remember Sky Color?)

W.O.W. stands for "Wonderful Original Art"(original means that it is not copied)

Develop Craft-A New Medium: Tempera Paint

In the painting studio, we are opening tempera paint!

Tempera paint can be applied so that it is opaque or semi-transparent. 

We keep our tempera paint in trays like this:

We share the tempera paint with others in the painting studio.

You will set up your own tray like this, and get a placemat before beginning to paint.

• Use red handled brushes, or green handled brushes with tempera paint

Introduction to Full Choice!

We've practiced our skills in our studio practice books. We've opened all five studios. We even have our plan books ready to go! 
Now what we've all been preparing for...FULL CHOICE AT LAST!!!

Studio Review/Tour:

1st, 2nd and 3rd Grade

• location of studios
• color of bracelets/studio colors 
• what paper to use in each studio
• what supplies are currently available in each studio.
• 1st grade parade through centers that are not visible from carpet.
• 1st grade stay in seat once they get their plan book.

• Once students sit down, remind them to raise their hand if they need help. 
• Second and Third grade- If they are having trouble finding something in the studio ask a friend.

If you're not sure what to make, try one of these:

Clean Up:

• Remind students that the clean-up song is silent.
• If someone is talking the teacher will choose their studio the following week--no choice.
• Remind students that they need to be completely finished cleaning and have their work turned in by the end of the 4 minute clean-up song. 
• If someone does not clean up on time or ignores the clean up song. The teacher will choose their studio for them the next week--no choice.
• If a studio is left messy, or is not cleaned up properly that studio will be closed the following week.

Envision

Artists develop mental images before they plan. This is called envisioning. 



Today we are going to envision an idea for the cover of our plan book, make a plan and draw a cover design for our plan book.

Brainstorm collaboratively multiple approaches to an art or design problem
Example: a self portrait.
Have students close their eyes and imagine--
What if?

1st grade = artwork from imagination

2nd & 3rd

Elaborate on an imaginative idea

1. What if you changed a color
2. What if you made it larger
3. What if you changed the time of day or the season
4. How can you change something in your artwork
5. What else is possible
